LandCruiser 70 Series Updates: New Manual Gearbox for 4-Cylinder Powertrain

Toyota has taken onboard feedback from loyal LandCruiser fans and, in direct response, has introduced a new five-speed manual transmission to pair with its recently introduced 2.8-litre 4-cylinder turbo-diesel engine.

Available across all Double Cab-Chassis, Troop Carrier, and GXL Wagon variants, this new option complements the existing six-speed automatic transmission, allowing drivers to find a setup tailored to their needs.

Starting at $77,200 for the Troop Carrier Workmate, making this a competitive addition to the range.

Built for Performance

The new 2.8-litre manual powertrain delivers 150kW of power, 450Nm of torque and features unique gear ratios to enhance performance across various terrains.

Shorter first, second, and third gears improve start-off power, while a longer fifth gear optimizes highway cruising by reducing engine noise and improving fuel efficiency.

Enhanced Durability and Control

Toyota has strengthened gearbox components including a new flywheel and a heavy-duty 12-inch clutch for superior slip resistance. Additionally, a triple synchronisation mechanism in the first gear ensures smooth shifting, making this transmission as user-friendly as it is robust.

Underscoring Toyota’s commitment to reliability, the automaker has equipped the manual variants with a dust seal at the rear end plate, preventing foreign matter from affecting the release bearing.

Familiar Features, Enhanced Experience

One of the best aspects of the new manual transmission is that it retains all the equipment and capability you’d expect from the LandCruiser 70 Series.

From towing capacity to GCM ratings, the manual variants perform on par with their automatic counterparts.

While the front console box and downhill assist control are removed in the manual models, you’ll still enjoy the same rugged dependability and legendary off-road capability.

Many customers missed having a manual option when the V8 model was discontinued, and Toyota’s new five-speed manual fills that gap well.

Why the LandCruiser 70 Series Stands Out

With its unmatched strength, capability, and adaptability, the LandCruiser 70 Series continues to set the benchmark for heavy-duty 4WDs.
